Look up on a cold, clear afternoon and you will usually see at least one thin white line stretched across the sky. Those lines are called contrails — short for "condensation trails" — and they are one of the most common and misunderstood things in aviation. Here is what they actually are.
Contrails are clouds of ice
A contrail is not smoke. It is not fuel. It is a thin cloud made of tiny ice crystals, formed when hot, moist exhaust from a jet engine meets extremely cold air at high altitude. The process is nearly identical to the way your breath turns into a visible puff on a freezing morning.
Jet engines produce water vapour as a by-product of burning fuel. At cruise altitude — typically between 30,000 and 42,000 feet — the outside air temperature is often below minus 40 degrees Celsius. When that vapour hits the cold air, it freezes almost instantly into ice crystals, forming the white line behind the aircraft.
Why do some planes leave contrails and others don’t?
This is the question every curious sky-watcher asks. The answer is that contrail formation depends on three things at flight altitude:
- Temperature — it has to be cold enough, usually below minus 40 °C
- Humidity — the surrounding air has to be near saturation
- Altitude — lower-flying aircraft (regional jets, turboprops) rarely fly high enough to produce contrails
If any of those conditions are wrong, no contrail forms. This is why you will sometimes see two aircraft on similar tracks at the same time, one leaving a pristine white line and the other leaving nothing at all. The "contrailing" jet is simply flying through a pocket of colder or wetter air.
Short, persistent, and spreading contrails
Not all contrails behave the same:
- Short-lived contrails dissipate within seconds, because the surrounding air is dry and the ice quickly sublimates away.
- Persistent contrails last minutes to hours, because the air at altitude is close to saturation.
- Spreading contrails grow wider over time and can eventually merge with one another, forming thin cirrus-like sheets across the sky.
In parts of the world with heavy overhead traffic — the northeast United States, western Europe, busy transpacific corridors — spreading contrails can meaningfully alter the appearance of the sky. Researchers have studied their effect on local temperatures and radiation balance for decades.
Chemtrails aren’t a thing
You will sometimes hear the word "chemtrails" — a conspiracy theory that claims contrails are secret chemical spraying. No credible science supports this. Contrails have been observed since the 1920s, every peer-reviewed atmospheric study of them describes ice crystals, and the variability between flights is fully explained by temperature and humidity. If you see two planes side by side with different trail behaviour, you are watching the same physics that makes your breath fog in winter.
Do contrails affect the climate?
Yes, and this is an active area of research. The ice clouds produced by persistent contrails can trap outgoing heat, adding a warming effect. On the other hand, they also reflect some incoming sunlight, which has a cooling effect. The net result is still warming, but smaller than the direct CO₂ emissions of the flight.
Airlines and researchers are now experimenting with "contrail avoidance" — small altitude adjustments to route aircraft around cold, humid pockets of air and avoid forming long-lived ice clouds. Early trials suggest the impact could be meaningful, and at almost no fuel cost.
How to spot contrails like a pro
Once you start paying attention, contrails become a window into the upper atmosphere. Try this the next time you see one:
